Structural sculpting that turned a neglected Japanese maple into the focal point of the garden.

The problem

A Japanese maple had been left unpruned for years. It was dense, misshapen and shading its own lower branches. Structurally it was sound. The owners wanted it shaped, not removed — and they did not want one unskilled cut to ruin a tree that still had value.

The solution

We assessed structure and health before any cutting. Primary branches were chosen to build a Niwaki frame over several visits. Foliage was thinned and cloud-pruned so the trunk line showed, and a follow-up program was set so the form could mature instead of being forced in one day.

The outcome

A neglected specimen worth about $4,000 became a garden centrepiece worth about $50,000. The tree is lighter, healthier, and the reason people look at that garden.
